Q. What are these "rare earth" magnets in the MagnaDrive technology?
A. Rare earth permanent magnets are key to MagnaDrive's product performance. Permanent magnets are an
important part of our everyday lives, serving as essential components in everything from electric motors, computers,
production equipment and automobiles. Rare earth permanent magnets are made of a combination of Neodymium,
Iron and Boron (NdFeB). This technology is the most recent addition to the family of high performance
permanent magnets, and became commercially available in the 1980's.
Q. How do MagnaDrive's rare earth magnets compare to these other common rare earth magnets?
A. MagnDrive's rare earth magnets are comprised of a proprietary formulation specifically designed to meet the unique requirements of our technology. Generally, high-strength permanent magnets are brittle and demagnetize below 150 Deg F. Because MagnaDrive's magnets may be spinning up to 6,800 rpm, it is critical to reduce brittleness. Also, due to the high heat environments in which many MagnaDrive products operate, MagnaDrive requires a 300 Deg F. resistance to demagnetization. The balancing of brittleness, heat resistance, and high-strength developed in the MagnaDrive laboratory and tested in the MagnaDrive R&D Center, has led to the creation of unique formulations protected by proprietary agreements.
Q. Why use rare earth magnets rather than regular permanent magnets?
A. Rare earth magnets have the highest energy product of all permanent magnets, permitting the small size and high
torque transmission capability of the MagnaDrive technology. NdFeB magnets will retain their magnetic performance properties for the life of the MagnaDrive product.
Q: Will the magnets demagnetize?
A: If they are exposed to temperatures above 300 Deg F, they demagnetize. We keep the temperatures within
the Coupling and ASD well below this temperature.
Q: How long will the magnets last?
A: The half-life of the magnets is 2,000 years.
