Application: Motor running a centrifugal irrigation pump. The pump ran full speed
during irrigation season. Flow is potato wastewater that is mixed with well water, then applied
to center pivot irrigation systems. Flow was controlled by manually throttling valves.
Application Specifications: 200 HP, 1800 RPM, 480 volts, motor connected through an
elastomeric coupling to a centrifugal pump. Horizontal shaft application.
Problem: Energy was wasted through the control valve. Irrigation pressures varied during
operation resulting in uneven water application rates.
MagnaDrive Solution: Install 18.5 MagnaDrive ASD and connect to a new pressure
regulated process control system.
Customer Resolution: The MagnaDrive ASD facilitated the ability to optimize pressure.
This allowed a switch to low pressure sprinkler irrigation system which saved energy. Sprinkler
pressure was reduced from 100 psi to 40 psi. Water consumption has been reduced by 35%
and crop production has increased.
Customer Comments: "Today we are down to 750 gallons per minute (per circle, from 1200 gpm), and have reduced
water pressure from 100 pounds at the pivot back to 40. With no electronics, the coupling is
not complex to operate and is proving both trouble-free and cost-effective."
