Application: Motor running a belt-driven centrifugal bag house fan. The fan ran full speed 24
hours a day with inlet dampers to maintain a constant pressure differential across the bag house.
Application Specifications: 125 HP, 1800 RPM, 480 volts, motor connected through belts to a
bag house fan. Horizontal application.
Problem: The fan was running at full capacity during normal operations resulting in excessive vibration.
Vibration during fan operation caused damage in the surrounding structure costing $10,000 per year
in maintenance. Power draw during fan starting generated a 10-second brownout plant-wide. Energy
was being wasted when the fan was operating against closed dampers.
MagnaDrive Solution: Remove belt drive and lock dampers open, replace damper operation with 16.5
MagnaDrive ASD. The motor was moved in line with the fan shaft and connected to the process
control system.
Customer Resolution: The MagnaDrive ASD eliminated the dampers with a potential energy savings
of 155,000 kWh/year, and current inrush during start-up was minimized. Additionally, vibration was
dramatically reduced, lowering long-term maintenance costs.
Customer Comments: "I can see (MagnaDrive) eliminating a lot of our day-to-day and year-to-year
maintenance on these machines, and extending the life of other equipment"
Mike Hennigan, Maintenance Planner.
