Application: Motor running a vertical submerged main mill effluent pump. The motor is above the wet
well at ground level and the pump is 20 feet below the motor on the wet well floor.
Application Specifications: Two motors and pumps, both 100 HP, 1200 RPM, 2300 volts, motor connected
to a vertical sump centrifugal pump. Vertical Solid Shaft application.
Problem: The pump station pumps all plant raw effluent to a clarifier. The pump station was designed to
operate at full speed 24 hrs per day. Flow was returned to the wet well through a control valve to maintain
a constant wet well level. There was no control of flow to the clarifier.
MagnaDrive Solution: Install two 16.5 MagnaDrive ASDs mounted between the shafts and motors.
The control system was modified to allow the MagnaDrive pump to match wet well level with effluent flow.
The pump station also may be controlled to allow one pump off during low flow periods, or varying wet well levels.
Customer Resolution: The MagnaDrive ASD provided process control and energy savings. Estimated annual
energy savings are over 700,000 kWh for the two-pump station for an annual energy savings of $32,000 per year.
Control of the pump station has improved as well.
Customer Comments: "This MagnaDrive ASD is a fantastic thing. It gave us energy savings and
flow control capabilities. I think there are a lot of applications throughout the pulp and paper industry that
haven't even been thought of yet. I am looking for other applications at our mill." Terry Dotson,
