Application: Motor running a centrifugal pump. The pump ran full speed 24 hours a day with a
bypass valve that was opened to maintain a constant 50 PSI of TMP water pressure on the line when valves
downstream were throttling.
Application Specifications: 250 HP, 1800 RPM, 2300 volts, motor connected through an elastomeric
coupling to a centrifugal pump. Horizontal application on skid.
Problem: The pump was running at full capacity during normal operations resulting in cavitation and
excessive vibration. These factors created a high level of maintenance to the application. Energy was wasted
when water was redirected through the bypass valve.
MagnaDrive Solution: Replace control valve operation with 18.5 MagnaDrive ASD. The motor was
moved back on base and actuator was installed and connected to the process control system.
Customer Resolution: The MagnaDrive ASD eliminated the bypass valve with a potential energy
savings of 633,333 kWh/year worth $19,000. The cavitation was eliminated and vibration was dramatically
reduced, lowering long-term maintenance costs.
Customer Comments: The MagnaDrive ASD was chosen for this 2300 volt system because of the
low equipment installation and infrastructure costs when compared to a Variable Frequency Drive. "We are
excited about the potential for this equipment and have budgeted for future applications throughout the plant."
