Application: Local electric power utility. Two large horizontal primary air fans supply
preheated air to boiler for electrical power generation.
Application Specifications: 300 HP, 1800 RPM, 2340 volts, motor connected to a large
fan system. Direct Fan connection.
Problem: During startup, the fan motor inrush would cause a 45 second plant-wide brownout.
Air flow was modulated by intake baffles. VFDs could not be used because of reliability issues
and the utility was unwilling to introduce harmonic currents into the power grid at their facility;
they wanted to supply the cleanest power possible to their customers.
MagnaDrive Solution: Installed two 20.5 MagnaDrive ASDs and incorporated them into
the process control system.
Customer Resolution: Start-up time was cut dramatically, resulting in easier start-ups
and less power consumption. Speed control is achieved without harmonic distortion. Additional
benefits included lower vibration which eliminated vibration-induced maintenance, including
the annual repair of motor and fan bases. Energy savings of 400,000 kWh per year were realized.
