Oxnard Wastewater

Application: Motor running a vertical centrifugal raw sewage pump. The motor is on the drive
floor and the pump is 24 feet below the motor on the dry well floor.
Application Specifications: 50 HP, 885 RPM, 480 volts, motor connected to a centrifugal pump.
Vertical Solid Shaft application.
Problem: The motor was driven through a Variable Frequency Drive that required repair. Spare
parts were not available and a new VFD would be costly. The facility experienced high harmonic power
distortion despite a sophisticated filtering system. Motor floor noise was also a problem.
MagnaDrive Solution: Replace a VFD with a 14.5 MagnaDrive ASD mounted between the
drive shaft and the motor. The control system was modified to allow the MagnaDrive pump to match the
previous process configuration.
Customer Resolution: The MagnaDrive ASD provided equivalent process control and energy
savings to the VFD. Electronic noise and harmonics were eliminated. Oxnard has an extensive harmonic
monitoring program that verified a significant improvement after the MagnaDrive ASD was installed.
Customer Comments: "Some of the benefits we didn't realize we would get until after the drive was
operating. The pump has smoothed out a lot, and we used to get a lot of electronic noise in the motors from the
VFDs. The MagnaDrive has made the whole pump station a lot quieter." John Carter,
